<em>Le 13 août 1968, à 16h57 minutes, 15 secondes (temps universel), magnitude 4.1 sur l’échelle de Richter, un tremblement de terre secouait La Louvière : son clocher en fut ébranlé et on dut l’abattre.</em> <br /><br />Par ces lignes débutait la circulaire envoyée en 1986 par <strong>André Balthazar</strong> et <strong>Pol Bury</strong> à leurs amis artistes, accompagnée de la photographie par <strong>Michel Duez</strong> de l’église Saint-Joseph de La Louvière, avec pour instruction de dessiner ou de rédiger leur « projet de réoccupation de l’espace laissé vide.»<br /><br />
<p align="justify">Plus de 200 projets teintés d’humour, d’impertinence, de désinvolture et parfois même d’irrévérence leur seront retournés, signés, entre autres, par Pierre Alechinsky, Ben, Kikie Crêvecoeur, Jean-Michel Folon, Roland Topor ou encore Serge Vandercam.<br /><br /><br />Dans le cadre des 150 ans de la fondation de la Ville de La Louvière, le <strong><a href="http://www.dailybulandco.be/expo20.html" title="Expo clochers" target="_blank">Centre Daily-Bul & C°</a></strong> présente pour la première fois l’entièreté de ces clochers. Certains saints dessins orneront même le saint des saints de l’église Saint-Joseph à La Louvière.<br />Durant cette exposition exceptionnelle, diverses animations permettront aux artistes en herbe de proposer leurs projets de clochers.<br />Fierté locale par excellence, l’église sans clocher de La Louvière, est devenue un symbole qui inspira et inspirera encore de nombreux artistes belges et d’ailleurs.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Un peu d'histoire : </strong></span><br /><br />La première pierre de l’église Saint-Joseph, située Place Maugrétout à La Louvière, est posée le dimanche 6 octobre 1867. Elle sera livrée au culte le 20 novembre 1870.<br />Cet édifice néo-roman composé de cinq travées à trois nefs, d’un transept saillant éclairé par deux rosaces, d’un choeur formé de deux travées et fermé par une abside semi-circulaire a été dessiné par l’architecte montois Joseph Hubert. Son portail est surmonté d’une tour à trois niveaux se terminant par une élégante flèche. Un carillon d’une quarantaine de cloche trône au sommet de la tour. L’intérieur, assez dépouillé, comporte néanmoins une oeuvre du céramiste Ernest D’Hossche, Le Baptême du Christ, souvent méconnue du grand public.<br /><br />Entre 1965 et 1970, l’activité sismique est abondante dans le Hainaut, tout particulièrement entre Mons et Charleroi. Le 13 août 1968 à 16h57, une secousse de magnitude 4.1 sur l’échelle de Richter est enregistrée sur le sismogramme de la<br />station de Dourbes, dépendant de l’Institut Royal Météorologique de Belgique. Dans la cité des loups, le séisme est assez violent et provoque de nombreux dégâts : cheminées ébranlées, verrières brisées, plafonds détériorés, rues jonchées de débris, mobilier détruit dans les habitations, etc. L’église Saint-Joseph sera également touchée : des briques se détachent, les pierres blanches de la corniche menacent de s’écrouler, les plafonds risquent de s’effondrer, la charpente a bougé, la flèche du clocher est disloquée, une lézarde dans la maçonnerie de la tour s’étire sur 90 cm ainsi qu’une brèche de 75 cm sur la voûte du baptistère.<br /><br />Le 14 août 1968, à la requête du bourgmestre Fidel Mengal, l’architecte Raoul Blairon remet un rapport sans appel : (…) comme cette situation ne peut se prolonger, il est urgent de prendre des mesures techniques pour sauvegarder la sécurité publique et les bâtiments des classes toutes proches (…). Nous proposons de faire réaliser de toute urgence le démontage de la toiture du clocher ainsi que l’enlèvement de la corniche de pierre blanche et une partie de maçonnerie de la tour. La construction d’une couverture provisoire permettant l’utilisation de l’édifice. L’exécution de ces travaux<br />nécessitera la réalisation d’ouvrages de protection permettant l’accès à l’église, le passage des trams et l’utilisation des classes toutes proches.</p>
