              <text>William Cliff, né à Gembloux en 1940, fit à trente ans une entrée éclatante en poésie avec un recueil intitulé "Homo sum". Ce titre, qui reprenait les paroles du Christ devant Ponce Pilate, était trop transparent pour ne pas provoquer une répulsion dans le monde littéraire belge encore très conformiste. Mais à Paris, Gallimard publia le recueil sans hésiter. Claude Roy racontera plus tard que quand Raymond Queneau arriva, un jour, avec le manuscrit qu’il venait de recevoir et de lire aussitôt, ils eurent le sentiment que "quelqu'un venait d’entrer dans la pièce". Comprenons non pas un texte mais un homme avec son poids d’humanité, de déréliction et de tendresse humaine.&#13;

A l’un des recueils suivants, "Ecrasez-le" (1973) ou "Marcher au charbon" (1978), le jeune Belge fut accueilli chez Bernard Pivot. A la stupéfaction du lanterneau poétique belge.</text>
